Western culture, as we know it, has its origins in ancient Greek culture. The moral principles governing modern society were inherited from the Greeks, but these principles were not always rational; some of them are based on the mythology and religious beliefs of the Hellenes. This article presents the moral debate between the divine and the human, from the precepts of shame and Guilt evidenced by Aeschylus’ in “The Oresteiaâ€, and their correlation with the subsequent culture of guilt established by Christianity.KEY WORDS Shame, guilt, justice, catharsis, ate.References
