Establishment of environmental valuation methods: wax palm case, municipality of Salento, Quindío

Abstract

The purpose of the project is to determine the most appropriate method to evaluate the municipality of Salento native flora, specifically the wax palm, since this tree is considered a national emblematic tree, home of the yellow eared parrot, natural habitat for this species considered in ways of extinction. There are several campaigns to raise awareness and to control the Easter time wax palm marketing, and to avoid the extinction of the yellow eared Parrot as well as the tree conservation. The knowledge generated from the application of a suitable method for environmental valuation, seeks to generate benefits for society therefore, structuring systems, policies and procedures to improve the valuation and demonstration of the ecosystems belonging to an organization. The proper application of the method allows to apply a native flora quantitative value, seeks to raise awareness in society about the care, protection and use of natural resources as the costs generated to turn the environmental resource back to its original state do not always achieve the aim of restoring the environment in a healthy and enduring ecosystem . Policies in Colombia do not suggest a control over the quantitative value of the natural resources, which method to apply or on which basis to value, how deterioration and usage should be reflective etc. Being the subject of valuation and measurement a matter for the accounting profession, this research provides a theoretical reference for the suggested methods for environmental goods and services and becomes a source of information to evidence the best method for the Wax Palm case of study in Salento, Quindío.
